Emancipation day 2025
August 1st marks Emancipation Day – the day the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect across the British Empire, including here in Canada, in 1834, 191 year ago. Today we take extra time to reflect and on the horrors of slavery, honour the strength and resistance of Black communities, and acknowledge the enduring legacy of anti-Black racism in our country and region.
At United Way Waterloo Region, we recognize that the impacts of slavery and systemic racism did not end with Emancipation. The mistreatment and marginalization of Black and racialized individuals continue to shape our communities, and we know we have not always gotten it right. We continue to acknowledge our shortcomings and the harm caused when equity is not centered in our work.
That is why equity must be more than a value – it must be a lens through which we do everything. Whether we are funding programs, convening community conversations, or supporting local organizations, we are committed to addressing structural barriers and building a region where everyone belongs and has the opportunity to thrive.
Today, and every day, we recommit to listening, learning, and showing up differently, because true community is only possible when it is rooted in justice.
We invite you to reflect with us, learn more about the legacy of slavery in Canada, and honour the incredible contributions and continued perseverance of Black Canadians.
