June is widely recognized as Pride Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and honoring its history, struggles, and achievements. Pride Month origins stem back to the Stonewall Riots (also known as the Stonewall Uprising) which occurred in June 1969. This uprisings came after a police raid on a gay bar in New York City where police forcefully removed employees and patrons from the bar (Library of Congress). Although police raids on 2SLGBTQIA+ spaces were not uncommon during that time, and acts of resistance had occurred before, the protests that followed the Stonewall raid were unprecedented in scale and impact. The uprising marked a turning point in the fight for 2SLGBTQIA+ rights, serving as a catalyst for the modern gay rights movement in the United States and around the world.
Although much progress has been made over the years, the fight is not over yet. Pride Month serves to promote acceptance, equality, and the celebration of the history, progress, and rights of 2SLGBTQIA+ people, as well as education and awareness. At United Way Waterloo Region, we believe diversity strengthens our community. When we listen, learn, and grow together, we help to build a more inclusive and connected future for everyone.
