Every year on February 11, United Way Centraide (UWC) and its partners come together to recognize 211 Day, a time to raise awareness about this essential service and advocate for increased investment to ensure sustainable funding. 211 is a free, confidential service that connects people to vital government and community-based health and social services. Whether through phone, chat, text, or web, 211 provides access to critical resources like mental health support, financial counselling, and housing assistance.
United Way and 211: A Strong Partnership
United Way Centraide Canada (UWCC) is a proud founding partner of 211 in Canada, supporting its expansion and advocating for its availability in all communities. Across the country, United Way organizations work closely with 211 service providers, sometimes even delivering the service directly.
The Growing Need for 211 Services
In the past two and a half years, calls related to housing and mental health services have increased significantly. As Canada continues to face economic uncertainty, rising living costs, and the impacts of climate-related disasters, 211 remains a trusted source of support, helping individuals navigate available services and resources.
211 has played a critical role in helping communities respond to crises such as floods, wildfires, and the COVID-19 pandemic. By providing a guided pathway to care, it ensures that individuals receive timely, accurate information and the help they need.
Building Awareness and Advocacy for 211
On 211 Day, the UWC network and 211 Service Partners are working to ensure more people know about and use this vital service.
Additionally, we encourage everyone to download and explore the 211 Canada App, which offers easy access to services (note: the app currently does not include Montreal data).
Beyond raising awareness, we are also advocating for increased, sustainable funding to expand 211’s reach. United Way Centraide Canada’s 2025 Pre-Budget Submission calls on policymakers to recognize the essential role of 211 in Canada’s social service network and ensure national coverage for all.
