Black History Month

"Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this nation: The potential for greatness lives within each of us."

During the month of February, we bring attention to and celebrate Black History Month, a time in which we honour the legacy of Black people in Canada and their communities, as well as partake in events and festivities that celebrate Black culture and history.

For the past few years that Waterloo Region District School Board has created an initiative called Black Brilliance in which secondary schools across the Waterloo Region come together to share their lived experiences and strive to recognize Black Brilliance all year long, not just during February.

MATHIEU DA COSTA

Mathieu Da Costa, an Afro-French explorer, was the first Black person thought to have set foot on Canadian soil as a free man hired by Europeans to act as a translator.
